Canadian paper maker Domtar will add 90 jobs at its Fort Mill operations center as part of a $1 million expansion, according to an announcement last week.

The new jobs will include executive, information technology, planning and customer service positions. The Domtar operations center is at Kingsley Business Park off Hwy. 160.

The expansion allows Domtar to locate jobs near its Southeastern paper production facilities.

The Montreal-based company, which boasts 10,000 employees and $6 billion in annual sales, operates a paper mill in Bennettsville and production facilities in Rock Hill and Tatum.

"Domtar's decision to reinvest in York County signals our continued progress toward becoming the preferred location in the Charlotte region for new office and corporate headquarters activity," York County Council Chairman Buddy Motz said.

Domtar is the top manufacturer of "freesheet" paper, common office copy paper, in North America. Despite a sluggish economy pinching expansions in other industries, county officials said the growing demand for office paper fueled Domtar's latest growth.

"Today's announcement is another sign that our efforts to strengthen the state's economic soil conditions are working to grow existing businesses and create job opportunities in South Carolina," Gov. Mark Sanford said in a press release. "As we compete in the global economy, our ability to attract these types of high-paying jobs will have a positive and long-term impact for the region and our state."

Domtar's roots have a 10-year history in York County.

Beginning when Willamette Industries opened its East Coast headquarters in 1998, the facility became an operations center for rival Weyerhauser in 2002 after a lengthy takeover bid.

In 2007, Domtar merged with Weyerhauser and continued operating in Fort Mill. Total employment in Fort Mill is about 290.
