ATLANTA Georgia Southern lost scholarships in football and men's golf on Tuesday and Georgia State's men's basketball team was warned that it could face sanctions next year.

The sanctions and results came in the NCAA's Academic Progress Report.

Among state schools, Kennesaw State's men's track team and Augusta State's men's golf team also lost scholarships after falling below the NCAA standards for academic progress.

The APR is a point system based on scholarship athletes' remaining eligible and in school.

Georgia and Georgia Tech exceeded the standards in every sport.

Georgia finished first in the Southeastern Conference for its football team's APR of 965. Georgia also ranked among the SEC's top three in men's and women's basketball, with scores of 958 and 971, respectively.

"While we do not yet have graduation rates for athletes at the level I want, I am very pleased at our progress as measured by this year's Academic Progress Rate report," said UGA president Michael Adams.

"Such should translate into significantly higher graduation rates not too far down the road. I salute our athletics director Damon Evans, our head coaches, and Ted White, our director of academic services, for the priority they have placed on this important goal."

The NCAA has established a score of 925 (out of 1000) as acceptable for each sport.

Georgia Tech's football score was 951. Its men's basketball score was 931 and its women's basketball score was 957.

Georgia Tech's golf team scored a perfect 1000 for the second straight year. The Tech women's swimming program was almost perfect at 997.

"It goes without saying that our primary mission is the education of our student-athletes," said Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich.

"We're very pleased with the performance of all our programs, and we continue to strive for improvement. This latest data is a positive reflection on the type of student-athletes that our coaches are recruiting as well as the academic support system that we have in place."

Georgia Southern lost 3.51 football scholarships and one-third of a men's golf scholarship for APR scores of 905 and 913, respectively. Kennesaw State lost 1.26 men's track scholarships for its 877 score.

Mercer lost one men's basketball scholarship with a 918 score.
