Rural NC community votes to become a town

The Associated Press

ARCHER LODGE, N.C. --

A small, rural North Carolina community has voted to become a town after three years of lobbying efforts.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Monday that the referendum passed after 423 out of 738 residents of Archer Lodge voted to incorporate. Archer Lodge will have about 3,000 residents and cover about nine square miles.

The town 15 miles east of Raleigh will have its own police department in three years and now can control its own planning and zoning laws. Previously, Johnston County officials made development decisions.

Some residents opposed incorporating out of fear the community will lose its slow-paced, rural feel. The interim mayor says major development is not part of the plan.
