TEGA CAY --
The grueling heat and dust on the ball field of Turner Field in Tega Cay did not stop the Dixie Dozen from taking the championship for the men's softball tournament.
Working their way through the winners' bracket of the recent tournament, the Dixie Dozen defeated the Baxter Village team 21-8 to take home the championship. Baxter Village was the number one team in the season standings with the Dixie Dozen trailing behind in the third position for the season.
With the help of home runs by Joey Fleming and Matt Swenson, the Dixie Dozen stayed on top of the game. Short stop Jeff Fleming made three diving plays and in defensive mode and Brent Towell hustled behind the plate. DeWayne Lundy not only hit well, but also played well in the field.
"We have played 10seasons in the Tega Cay league and won four championships, along with two second place finishes in the league,” Fleming said. “Nine of our players grew up in Tega Cay and Fort Mill, so we love playing here."
This year's title has a special meaning for the team.
"The tournament is named after one of our former teammates, Austin Ring, who passed away in February. That makes the tournament win even more special” Fleming said.
Joey Blethen of the Tega Cay Parks and Recreation Department, said the men's and women's softball leagues, along with the adult kickball league are all growing. “The adults play some competitive games,” Blethen said. "We will have all three leagues again in the fall," he added.
