Police are looking for a suspect they said drove into and dragged a Fort Mill mother in a local church parking lot last week.

The mom, Stacey Burns, 21, has a broken foot and broken toes after the incident. She said she got in front of the driver's car to stop it from hitting some children moments after a confrontation with the car's driver.

Around 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, Burns and a next door neighbor, Christy Nelson, 27, stood in Burns' driveway on Brookmead Drive watching their four children and others play across the street in the Lighthouse Church parking lot when a car whizzed by.

"Stacey and I both hollered out, 'Slow down,'" Nelson said.

The female motorist drove down the street, turned around and stopped in front of Burns' driveway.

"She rolled her window down and proceeded to curse us out," Nelson recalled. "She said, 'You don't know who I am or what I'm capable of. You don't need to be telling me what to do.'

"I said, 'All we're asking you to do is slow down because our children are playing in the church parking lot and at anytime one could come running across the street."

When the motorist told the women she did not care about their children, Nelson tried to get the woman's tag number to call police. That's when the woman drove to the church parking lot and again yelled at the women," according to a York County Sheriff's Office report.

Nelson's 7-year-old daughter was riding with Burns' 3-year-old daughter in a miniature toy car while Nelson's son and another boy played with skateboards. Burns' 2-year-old daughter and another child were playing with rocks in the middle of the parking lot.

"I thought she was going to nose into the parking lot, back up and leave," Nelson said.

But the woman accelerated instead.

"As soon as she took off, I took off running from the end of my driveway," Burns said. "I was yelling, 'Y'all get out of the way. Move.'

"I pushed my daughter backwards to get her out of the way," Burns added. "The car hit me. She was three inches from hitting my daughter."

Burns was taken to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, where she was treated and released. She had two broken toes and a fractured foot, as well as a bruised hip and pelvic bone.

Nelson was grateful for Burns' sacrifice. "She threw herself in front of that car to save my children's lives," she said. "I am blessed."

No arrest had been made in the case as of Monday evening.

The motorist, described as a black woman between the ages of 25 to 30 and wearing a nose ring, drove a gold or tan-colored car with a temporary tag that expires on May 30, 2008, the report stated.
