BB&T branch robbed - again
(Published May 07, 2008)

For the second time in almost a year, the BB&T branch on Hwy. 160 was robbed.

York County Sheriff's Office deputies cordoned off the bank with yellow crime scene tape about an hour after the 12:15 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, robbery and were searching for the suspect who fled the bank on foot after demanding and receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, according to sheriff's office spokesman Lt. Tim Hager.

Bank employees told investigators the man apparently came into the bank holding a piece of paper that may have been a note, but never gave it to a teller. Rather, Hager said, the suspect verbally demanded money from one of the tellers, who complied. The suspect then left the bank and headed toward the Harris Teeter grocery store located behind the bank.

By 1 p.m., as many as a dozen sheriff's office vehicles, including forensics units, a canine unit and several unmarked patrol cars descended on the bank. Detectives and deputies interviewed witnesses inside while a sign on the door informed customers the branch was temporarily closed.

No one was injured during the robbery, and Hager said the suspect never showed a weapon. The sheriff's office is working in conjunction with the FBI on the case, standard procedure for a bank robbery because it is a violation of both state and federal laws.

"This is the second time this bank has been hit," Hager said. "We caught the last group about a year ago. We've had some luck up in that area."

Hager said bank employees handled the robbery correctly by complying with the robber's demands.

"The banks know what they are supposed to do, they did their part and complied and no one was hurt," Hager said. "Now we'll do our part and hopefully catch this guy."

Hager described the robber as a black man in his mid 20s with dreadlocks and a close-shaven beard. The man was wearing a black track suit with white stripes along one sleeve and a white logo on the breast. He also wore a white ball cap.
