TEGA CAY - Business is really picking up in the city.
So much so, that the city is amending its current year budget to include $220,000 more in revenue from business licenses it expects to collect through the end of the fiscal year in October. That brings the projected total revenue from business licenses to $600,000 in the first year the city has issued them, according to documents provided by city staff.
At the same time, the amendment notes revenue shortfalls in other areas, including a $65,000 dip in car tax revenues, $112,000 in permit fees, $68,000 in building inspections, $161,000 in stormwater compliance fees and $30,000 less than expected in hospitality tax money.
The overall revenue increase is canceled out with increased spending, however. Major expenses include $90,000 more for contracted services and $20,000 for utilities in the Public Works Department; $8,000 for more police uniforms and $15,000 in additional auto expenses and $55,000 more than expected on legal fees.
Some of the spending reflects the city's motto that Tega Cay residents live "the good life." An additional $8,317 was spent on concerts.
Late changes to the proposed amendment Monday and technical difficulties that prevented city staff from displaying a budget worksheet for the audience prompted the council to vote unanimously to table the issue until its June meeting.
Councilman John Dervay said he noticed inconsistencies in the proposed amendment and wanted to address each one in detail before moving forward on the budget ordinance.
