Tega Cay annexes park land; plan shrinks in size
(Published July 22, 2008)

With a unanimous city council vote, all the pieces of Catawba Park are finally in place.

Originally planned to span as much as 120 acres of riverfront on Dam Road at the foot of Lake Wylie Dam, Catawba Park has been scaled back to roughly 75 acres, but plans still call for ball fields, a gym, trails, a disc golf course, a dog park, fishing piers and a paddle boat launch. Duke Energy, which controls the land and the river, decided to subdivide the property and keep approximately 44 acres around the dam outside city limits.

The park plan includes a 10-acre donation from Drake Capital, the developer that took over the Gardendale project, and the nearly 65 acres owned by Duke Energy that was annexed Monday. The Duke Energy land still has to be rezoned for park use, which requires two readings and a public hearing.

Tega Cay Planning Director Chris Rice said he expects to get a zoning application from Duke Energy by the end of the month.

Development of the park will take several years, maybe as much as a decade, according to city officials, but Duke Energy will be doing much of the work on its property - including constructing the piers and redesigning the boat ramp on the site.
