Troop 250 hosts open house

Boy Scout Troop 250 is hosting a School Night for Scouting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Gold Hill Middle School.

Troop 250 will present a slide show that showcases some of the exciting outings, such as camping, whitewater rafting, caving, biking, shooting, rock climbing and horseback riding that Scouting has to offer. Adult leaders and scouts from the troop will to answer questions boys or their parents may have.

New Southern Women plan lunch

The New Southern Women's club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, in the Spratt Building, 215 Main St., Fort Mill.

Join the ladies for a $10 salad buffet lunch followed by tales of Fort Mill by longtime residents Thomas Spratt IV, retired Judge Brenda Ervin and Don Lomas.

DAR essay winners named

The Nation Ford Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution has announced the winners of the annual American History Essay Contest, selected from over 200 essays.

Jochebed Bogunjoko of Springfield Middle School received the award for the eighth grade while Abigail Lockhart, who is home schooled, won the fifth grade award. Runners up were Perrin Thompson, Evan Mathis, both of Springfield Middle School, and Elkyn Rivas of Indian Land Middle School.

The chapter presented the two winners with a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. The title of this year's essay was "I Spy: Espionage in the American Revolution."

The Nation Ford Chapter, is composed of women over 18 who can trace their lineage to someone who contributed with unfailing loyalty to the American side during the Revolution. The chapter and National Society promote historic, patriotic, and educational endeavors.

Newcomers meet

The Newcomers Club of York County will hold its next meeting at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.

Like horses? Join new 4-H Club

A new 4-H Horse Club is accepting new members. This club will meet at 6:30 pm. the first Thursday of each month at the Clemson Extension office in York.

The club will participate in the following activities: County and State 4-H Presentations, camping trips, Fall Live Stock Show, State 4-H Horse show, Hippology, Horse Bowl and Horse Judging, community service projects and monthly arena sessions. Tori Campbell and Mark McCarter will be the 4-H volunteer leaders of this club. They will have a kickoff meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at the York County Extension Office, 120 North Congress St. Registration required. Lions awarded

The Tega Cay Lions were awarded First Place in the District Newsletter Contest for a club with more than 50 members for 2007-08. The award

was presented to the club at the SC District 32-D Cabinet Meeting July 28 in Blythewood.

MOPS open house

Fort Mill Mothers of Preschoolers is planning an open house from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at First Baptist Church, 121 Monroe White St., Fort Mil.

MOPS, formed to encourage, equip and develop every mother of preschoolers to realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader, strives to develop meaningful relationships through small groups and to share their love of Jesus Christ. The group meets every other Friday. Vist www.fortmillmops.org.

Tega Cay women invited

The Tega Cay Women's Club meets the last Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Tega Cay City Hall for an interesting program, refreshments, and updates on the many activities available. Lions aid schools

The Tega Cay Lions donated $2,758 to the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools. The money was raised through the annual Carolina Motor Madness held at Knights Castle and through donations to the club.

The new Tega Cay Lions Club Scholarship Fund was launched this year and the club has a goal of raising $50,000.

Meet the Moose

The Fort Mill Moose Lodge 1240 is a nonprofit family fraternity. Fort Mill members say it's one of the friendliest places in town for friends and fellowship and to meet, have fun, and socialize. The main focuses of the fraternity are children, the elderly, and the local community.

Birthmother group meets regularly

A support group for women who have given up children for adoption meets in Fort Mill. The goal of this group is to help heal from the pain of losing children. Calling all gardeners

Members of Gardening on the Cay may not all have green thumbs, but they are eager to learn as much as they can about gardening while enjoying the social aspects of the club. Gardening on the Cay is affiliated with the Garden Club of South Carolina Inc., and a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The club is open to all ladies in Fort Mill Township. Meetings are held in member's homes on the second Monday night each month and dues cost $20 for the year.
