Although damage from remnants of Tropical Storm Faye was minor, one casualty was the cinderblock and brick wall on North White Street.

Last Wednesday morning, it lay toppled along the sidewalk, a pile of bricks, cinderblocks and mortar. Only a small section of the wall close to Massey Street remained standing. Road signs planted above also came down.

"The best we can tell, the rain did it," Town Manager David Hudspeth said. "I don't know why it took 30 years to fall down."

The town built and maintained the wall. Last year, it removed a staircase that led down the hill to the sidewalk below and bricked over the opening in the wall. Last Wednesday, an engineer was evaluating the site to determine the best way to repair the damage. A work crew removed the debris Thursday.

"We'll have to rebuild the whole thing," Hudspeth said.

He did not know how much the repair job would cost, though. That will depend on how the town decides to fix it.

"We might just rebuild another wall, or we could do some kind of terracing," he said. "We've got the engineer looking at it to come up with some options."

Last Tuesday's storm also caused a a huge tree to fall on power lines on Brickyard Road, causing electrical outages in parts of Fort Mill that lasted lasted into the evening. Town Hall lost power early in the afternoon. In all, more than 1,500 homes and business lost power, according to Duke Energy.
