FORT MILL TOWNSHIP -- Marching bands from Indian Land, Fort Mill and Nation Ford high schools marched their way into first place wins last weekend.

At the Olde English Festival of Bands in Rock Hill, Indian Land High School won first place in Class 1A. Indian Land also took home first prize for its hornline and earned second place honors for the drumline. The students also scored high enough to compete in the final competition, where they placed eighth.

Nation Ford also competed at the Olde English Festival of Bands and took home first place in Class 3A as well as first place honors for color guard and music. Nation Ford earned a spot in the final competition, where the students placed third overall.

"We were the highest placing 3A band, so we were pleased," Nation Ford band director Martin Dickey said. "The students played better, marched better, and came a long way over the last two weeks."

The Fort Mill High School Marching Band competed at the Providence Cup Grand Championship at Providence High School in Charlotte. The band took home awards for best music, best percussion, best color guard and best drum majors. It earned a first place award for Class 4A and first place in the overall competition.

Fort Mill's marching band and Indian Land's marching band travel to Blythewood High School Saturday to compete against 31 bands at the Blythewood Tournament of Bands. Nation Ford will travel to Western Carolina's Tournament of Champions, where it will compete against bands from across the Southeast.

"It's a huge competition," Dickey said. "Our goal is just to make it to finals."
