FORT MILL — A clerk at a payday lending business was shot and killed tonight in an apparent robbery, authorities said.

The man’s identity has not been released, pending family notification, said York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant.

Officials received a 911 call from Anyday Payday Loans just before 6:30 p.m., Bryant said.

Three masked men entered the store and "attempted to rob the place,” Bryant said. “As a result, the employee was shot and died upon arrival at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.”

A customer was inside the business during the incident but was not hurt.

Authorities have not determined how much if any cash was taken. The men fled the business in a 2000 silver-colored Plymouth Voyager, Bryant said.

“We recovered the vehicle a short distance away off of Hwy. 51 at Allied Waste,” Bryant said.
