FORT MILL --
The Art Mill will get its reprieve.
And keep its doors open – at least through 2009.
The Fort Mill Town Council on Saturday voted to grant thousands of dollars to the Fort Mill Art Guild to help the group pay the rent on the Main Street building that houses the Art Mill.
Earlier this week, art guild President Marcia Buike asked the town council to consider giving the Art Mill between $5,000 and $9,000. Without the money she said, the Art Mill, which serves as a gallery and meeting place and hosts classes taught by local artists, would have to close at the end of June.
The council, despite the objections of two members, voted to give the Fort Mill Art Guild $1,000 a month starting in July to keep the Art Mill open. That contribution will end in December.
“I’m speechless,” a shocked Buike said when reached Saturday. “I’m so thrilled. This is very exciting. This town council has taken a stand. They have done something foreign to them. I want them to know I will work even harder to justify their faith in the Art Mill.”
Without the town’s financial assistance, Buike said, the Art Mill would have had to close its doors on June 30. The council’s decision paves the way for Buike to continue her efforts to revamp downtown Fort Mill through the arts. “The Chair-ity,” a guild fundraiser, was scheduled for Saturday.
