TEGA CAY --
The fifth Tega Cay Chili Cook-Off came just in time for a rainy, cold Sunday afternoon earlier this week. The fund-raising event was attended by more than 400 area residents who had the opportunity to enjoy chili entries from 26 local cooks. All proceeds from the event go to support the Tega Cay Volunteer Fire Department.
Buster Millwood of Tega Cay came in first place with his “Complete Meal Chili.” Millwood is not only a local volunteer fireman, but has also entered the annual event all five years, taking home awards in some of the Tega Cay Cook-Offs.
Sam Lawrence from Storage & Business Center of Tega Cay walked away with two of the awards: second place in the Business Division for his venison chili and also the “People's Choice” Award. The winner for the Business Class was Fort Mill BBQ.
Clay Arceneaux of Tega Cay coveted the Best Table Décor prize for his cupcake alligator and Mardi Gras decor that accompanied his Cajun Chili.
A new category this year was the MEATiest Chili, sponsored by J & S Butcher and Deli. Randy Ragland was awarded the trophy and a fresh turkey for his “Monkey Chow” Chili.
Judges for the chili tasting were Joshua Kielman, executive sous chef of Passion 8 Bistro, Brian Saemann, Food & Beverage Director of Tega Cay Golf Club, and Suzanne May.
Organizers expect to donate more than $2,200 to the volunteer fire department for use in purchasing needed equipment.
