McDonald gets leadership role

Indian Land Middle School Principal David McDonald was elected to serve as the Upper Midlands Regional director-elect for the South Carolina Middle School Association Board of Directors. He will serve a two-year term in which he will represent our area in developing programs, activities and support of middle schools across the state.

Student loan applications available

Applications for Leroy Springs Student Loans are available for students who are planning full-time attendance at a four-year accredited college or university in the state of South Carolina or at York Technical College in the fall.

Since 1942, loans have been made to students attending four year colleges and universities. In 1996, the Springs Close Foundation's Board of Directors extended the program to include York Technical College.

Angie McCrae, president of the Springs Close Foundation, which funds and manages the program, said applications can be obtained in Fort Mill from the office of the Foundations at 1826 Second Baxter Crossing. In Lancaster, they are available from the office of The Springs Close Foundation at 201 West Gay Street. High school seniors can pick up applications from the guidance office at their school.

Loans are primarily based on need and are for tuition, room and board and fees. They are available for undergraduate students, nursing students, students enrolled in medical or dental school and students attending York Tech.

Bellino, Robertson graduate

Jason Bellino of Fort Mill and Courtney Robertson of Tega Cay were among those honored at Virginia Tech University's fall commencement ceremony held Dec. 19, 2008, in Cassell Coliseum. Approximately 2,500 bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Ph.D. candidates along with their families and friends attended the on-campus ceremony presided by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger.

Bellino received a Bachelor of Science degree in geosciences from the College of Science. Robertson received a Bachelor of Science degree in human nutrition, foods and exercise from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
