Free classical concert Sunday
For local residents, an afternoon of classical music is both affordable and closer to home than ever.
The Celebration of Summer Concert Sunday, June 7, will feature professional musicians from around the Charlotte and Lancaster areas. The event, organized by Indian Land resident Erin Moon-Kelly, begins at 3 p.m. at the Lancaster County Council of the Arts. Admission is free, but donations to the Lancaster County Council of the Arts will be accepted.
Sunday's concert will feature Kelly and her mother Joyce Moon, a professional musician from Summerville, both playing the flute. Leah Moss, a member of the Charlotte Concert Band and a teacher at the Charlotte Academy of Music, on the oboe; Katie Brown, a member of the Charlotte Concert Band, and the Matthews Concert Band and a music instructor at Southern Park Music School, on the clarinet; Jenn Hommes, a member of the Charlotte Concert Band and a teacher at the Carolina International School, on the bassoon.
The music will be baroque and light classical, Kelly said, and "very audience-friendly."
Kelly, a music professor at USC Lancaster and owner of EMK Music, has been organizing concerts in Lancaster since moving to Indian Land in 2002.
"Many people who live in Lancaster County would like to go to events in Charlotte by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra or Youth Ensemble. However, because of their jobs or the distance, it isn't an option they choose to pursue, so we try to find options that are local," said Kelly.
Lancaster has a burgeoning arts scene, of which Kelly and her concert series, including the Friends Concert Series and the Student Community Concert Series, have played a large part. Kelly hopes that the arts boom in the area will entice businesses to the area, she said.
"I hope we'll bring in more businesses similar to those in Ballantyne and generate more tax revenue for the county," Kelly said. "We have the talent in this area. We have talent moving in from all over the country every day."
Erin Moon-Kelly
When Erin Moon-Kelly was 8 years old, she was told by her parents, both professional musicians, that she should pick an instrument and learn how to play. Kelly chose the flute, the instrument her mother also plays, and a musical career was born. By the time she was in fourth grade, Kelly was tutoring students in music classes. At the age of 14, she began playing professionally around Summerville, where she attended high school. After graduating from high school, Kelly received a bachelor's degree in music education from Winthrop University and a master's degree in flute performance from Converse College. She is a member of the Charlotte Concert Band and has performed as a substitute musician with the Greater Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra and has also performed with the Calvary Church Orchestra in Charlotte. In addition to being an adjunct professor of music at USC Lancaster, Kelly is also the owner of EMK Music in Indian Land, a professional music service company that provides custom concerts for weddings, store openings and other events, private and group lessons and other music performance and music education services. As an advocate for arts in Lancaster County, Kelly is a member of the Lancaster County Council for the Arts and has performed in, organized and produced solo and chamber music recitals such as the Friends Concert Series and the Student Community Concert Series. In addition, she has worked with the Indian Land High School Marching Band as part of the woodwind faculty during their annual band camps. |
