The Fort Mill Lady Jackets bounced back last Friday to pick up their sixth win of the season, ending a five-game skid with a 56-35 bludgeoning of Clover High School.
The win puts the Lady Jackets at 6-13 and 2-4 in Region III-AAAA, but the six wins gives them the most they have had in three seasons.
Fort Mill played a complete game as it won every quarter and used a huge run in the second quarter to pull away. The Lady Jackets built a 24-5 lead through the second quarter and would hold off any runs Clover would make throughout the game. Fort Mill wasn’t finished offensively as it went on a 14-2 run in the third quarter to put things out of reach.
Senior Alexia Grevious was big for Fort Mill in the middle as she dumped in 15 points to lead the Lady Jackets. As usual, junior Jenna White dominated from midrange to score 11 points as Fort Mill had eight Lady Jackets score.
Earlier in the week, the Northwestern High Lady Trojans continued their run at perfection with a 61-32 at Fort Mill High.
Now 19-0 on the season and 6-0 in the region, the Lady Trojans took the opening tip-off against Fort Mill and never really looked back.
Northwestern jumped out to a 12-0 lead hitting its first four shots, while Fort Mill struggled early by going 0-3 from the field to open the game.
Fort Mill didn’t score until 2:12 left in the opening period on a free-throw from White, who led the Lady Jackets with nine points.
Both teams weren’t shy at taking shots, as Northwestern hit seven of 13 shots in the first quarter, while Fort Mill struggled, going 0-10 from the field. Fort Mill’s only three points in the quarter came off free-throws from White and sophomore Taylor Sutton.
Northwestern continued to pull away in the second quarter as senior guard Kelia Shelton and junior guard Xy’resha Isom each scored five points in the period.
Shelton led the Lady Trojans in the game by scoring 15 points. Senior forward Amber Stewart also added consistent play throughout the game by dropping in 14 points.
The Lady Trojans continued to pull away after leading 18-3 after the opening quarter by opening the second period on an 8-0 run.
Fort Mill didn’t hit its first field goal in the game until just under six minutes in the second quarter on a basket by freshman Hannah-Kate Christopher. The Lady Jackets played better defense in the quarter and its offense also started to click as White would hit back-to-back three-pointers to make it 26-11 midway through the second.
Down by 19 at the half at 32-13, Fort Mill came out aggressive and forced Northwestern into starting 1-5 from the field. While things worked better for the Lady Jackets on defense, they struggled on offense to start and didn’t get a shot off in the third quarter until nearly three and a half minutes left. Fort Mill didn’t score until nearly a minute later as White hit a free-throw. Junior Haley Bonner drained a trey at 1:30 in the period to give the Lady Jackets their first field-goal of the period.
Fort Mill was able to finish the quarter on a surge and outscored the Trojans 11-10 in the period, scoring 10 of those points in the final 90 seconds.
Northwestern started the fourth quarter up 42-24 and didn’t lose any focus as it finished strong, outscoring Fort Mill 19-8 to end the game.
