Last Monday was a teacher’s work day in the Fort Mill schools. All the children enrolled in the F.L.Y.E.R.S. Program in the were invited to a special treat – a day at the Field Trial Barn on the Anne Springs Close Greenway.
More than 275 kids attended. This is a great place with tons of room inside and out, especially on a beautiful day. The barn, which is used for a variety of events, from weddings to fundraisers such as the annual oyster roast that benefits local high school band programs, is surrounded by trails that wind through he woods. There’s also a lake (but fishing there is reserved for greenway members).
The children were invited to bring their bikes, scooters and roller blades. The only restrictions were that each student have a helmet and pads. Officer David Bivins, resource officer for Fort Mill Middle School, came to teach a course on bike safety. It consisted of a movie and some hands on instructions. The children were all tested and all 75 that participated were issued certificates.
The children, like Ashley Childs, Nathan Ware, McKenzie Cairico, Robert Campbell, Lila Thompson and Hope Cornette, were excited about knowing the rules and how to stay safe riding a bike – even days later!
The kids who did not participate in the bike safety course were treated to outside activities. Also, a corn hole game, crafts and games were set up in the barn. It was a great day and all 275 children said they want to go back as soon as possible.
If you involve kids in activities like sports, activities, music and art, it is known to improve their self-esteem. Research show kids who are confident are less likely to be bullied.
A big thanks to Officer Bivins who makes the safety of the children his number one priority.
