Every now and then, angels appear cleverly disguised as ordinary human beings.
My friend Terri Fletcher hosts a party to benefit animals every year, and it just gets better each year. Not only is it one of the best parties of the holiday season, it is one of the only ones that benefits the animal. The gifts that are received help the animals all year. This year, all donations went to Paws in the Panhandle, a dog rescue, non-profit organization founded by Indian Land resident Gloria Davey.
The food is always great. Olive Garden, Showmar’s, Subway and Donatos Pizza all donated this year.
Jeff Lewis, the DJ, donated his time and talent, and the residents of Black Horse Run donated the use of the clubhouse for the night.
This year, the party was larger than ever. These are only a few of the items received: 1,093.8 pounds of dog food, $190 cash, $40 in gift cards, 14 bags of dog treats.
We are all delighted with the results. Davey is trying to build a no-kill facility in Indian Land. I know Davey, and with her hard work and determination I can see this on the horizon, especially with a little help from her friends.
Animals count on us to help them. In exchange they love us unconditionally!
Charles Schulz wrote, “Happiness is a warm puppy.”
A big thank you to Fletcher for her hard work and tireless energy making these parties more successful every year.
Find the right dog!
Match your activity level. Some breeds, including retrievers, thrive on lots of exercise. If you don’t want a high-energy dog, toy breeds are the better fit.
Set priorities. Tell the shelter what you want in a dog. They get to know each one so they can help match you with the right personality.
Consider their “‘do.” Sheep dogs and Pomeranians have beautiful hair, but it comes at a price. Want less maintenance? Portuguese water dogs (like Bo, the White House dog) are low shedding and even hypoallergenic!
