Start the New Year with kindness and feel great

Our tree is droopy, no unopened presents are under the tree and the house is too quiet, but I think that this has been the first year I have had a chance to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas in a very long time.

I believe one of the reasons is the enormous acts of kindness shown during this holiday season. From the kind individuals who paid for layaway items for parents struggling with money issues this year, to the individual who dropped rare coins in the Salvation Army kettles around the country.

Locally, our fire departments delivered more toys and groceries to area residents then ever before. Even the Indian Land Action Council got into the action by collecting food items at the annual Christmas Party for the Belair Church Food Pantry and delivering a van full of items. Of course these are only a few acts of kindness, but all over the United States it seemed that there was more caring and generosity shown for one another this past year.

Doing a good deed is going to make you feel good. But doing one if it’s not expected gives you an even bigger mood boost. In one study, everyone who gave to a charity said they felt happier, but those who did it anonymously or donated without being asked reported the highest surge of happiness.

It does not have to be monetary; just any act of kindness will do, so pass it on throughout the New Year.

“If you have much, give of your wealth. If you have little, give of your heart.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
