If you live in a cave, you probably are the only one around who has not heard that the S.C. Republican primary will be held Jan. 21.
Things have already started to heat up, and Lancaster County is getting ready. Poll workers had training last week for the primary. There was one important thing missing from our training: Cassie Stump. She just retired from her position as director of Lancaster County’s Voter Registration and Election Commission.
We will miss her infectious laugh and great sense of humor that we have heard through the many years. She has always been there, getting everyone registered to vote. She has been in the trenches when the machines wouldn’t work or there was a hang-up somewhere. She was there to do whatever she had to do, always with a smile and never losing her temper. She was always professional.
I have known Stump and her family for a very long time. She is one of the biggest Gamecock fans in South Carolina. She also comes from a family of major volunteers in Indian Land. She will be missed by everyone in the county offices. But we are fortunate to have her right here in Indian Land, where she lives and where she will continue to do a fantastic job, only this time volunteering.
Good luck to Cassie Stump and good luck to Mary Ann Hudson, who will be the new director.
Here’s a little bit of election trivia:
The cost to run a presidential primary in South Carolina is approximately $1.2 million.
The slow start to the 2012 presidential campaign was particularly evident in South Carolina. In the first quarter of 2011, this state received fewer visits by presidential prospects than Iowa and New Hampshire.
