Knights’ pitchers clip Red Wings

Staff Report

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --

Four Charlotte Knights pitchers combined to yield only two hits in a 6-0 victory over the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field on Sunday.

Charlotte accounted for all the runs it would need in the top of the first inning as hits by Dan Johnson and Conor Jackson drove in Greg Golson and Tyler Kuhn, respectively, to stake the Knights to a 2-0 lead.

Johnson added a two-run home run in the third. Jackson was driven in on a single by Ray Olmedo in the fifth, and Kuhn came home on a single by Dallas McPherson in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Charlotte’s pitching quartet did the rest.

Starter Deunte Heath went the first four innings, giving up the two hits and striking out three. Jhan Carlos Marinez, Leyson Septimo and Brian Omogrosso worked the last five innings without giving up a hit and combined to strike out five.

The Knights did not issue a walk. Marinez was credited with the win.

Luke French took the loss for Rochester, giving up 10 hits and five runs, all earned, over 4 2/3 innings.

On Saturday, the Red Wings dominated the Knights 12-1 behind an 8-run sixth inning in which the Knights committed three errors.

The Wings loaded the bases against Charlotte starter Simon Castro in the bottom of the sixth. Sean Burroughs singled for his third hit of the game, and Matt Carson and Tsuyoshi Nishioka followed with bunt singles. Rochester got a boost from Rene Rivera, who drilled a 3-1 pitch up the middle for a run-scoring single that extended the lead to 4-0.

Castro was replaced by Gregory Infante, and Ray Chang greeted him with a bloop double to right field. Two more runs scored, followed by a throwing error that broke the game open with Rochester leading 7-0 with none out.

The Knights’ fielding woes continued with a throwing error that let in two more Rochester runs. A groundout by Burroughs brought in the 10th run of the game, and when Thomas scored on a wild pitch, the crazy eight-run inning was complete. The total damage: 12 batters, five unearned runs, five hits, three errors, and the largest Wings offensive inning of the season.

The series was scheduled to conclude Monday night.

Before hitting the road last week, the Knights split a four-game home set with the Columbus Clippers.

They return to the Castle in Fort Mill July 4 to begin a five-game homestand that takes the team to the All-Star break. After the break, the Knights will host the Durham Bulls for four games beginning July 12 and then head back to Rochester.
