FORT MILL The Charlotte Knight wasted no time getting back into the swing of things after the Triple-A All-Star break.
The Knights won four straight games after the break sweeping Durham to run their record to 54-42 through Sunday.
During the All-Star break, Knights’ slugger Dan Johnson came in second place in the 2012 Triple-A Home Run Derby at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY. Johnson, who ended the first half of the season with 21 home runs, finished behind Buffalo’s Valentino Pascucci, who won the contest in front of his home crowd.
Johnson hit one home run in the first round and finished in a three-way tie. In the tie-breaking swing-off round, Johnson slugged two home runs to move on to round two, where he flourished.
In round two, Johnson launched 13 home runs to advance to the finals against Pascucci. Johnson, who hit .276 with 21 home runs and 62 RBIs in the first half of the season, then hit five home runs in the final round, but Pascucci hit just enough to win.
In 2010, as a member of the Durham Bulls, Johnson won the Triple-A Home Run Derby held at Coca-Cola Park in Lehigh Valley.
In the Triple-A All-Star game itself, Johnson went 0-2 as did Knights catcher Josh Phegley
Pitcher Jhan Carlos Marinez, who posted a 2-2 mark with a 3.14 ERA in 26 games this season for the Charlotte Knights, was recalled to Chicago Friday.
Marinez, 23, is now the ninth Charlotte Knights player this season to go from Charlotte to Chicago this season. The others include pitchers Dylan Axelrod, Eric Stults, Jose Quintana, Brian Bruney, Leyson Septimo, Brian Omogrosso, Deunte Heath and outfielder Jordan Danks.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Marinez was obtained by the White Sox from the Marlins as part of the compensation for Ozzie Guillen. In 43 innings pitched this season with the Knights, Marinez had 47 strikeouts. Marinez, who entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the seventh-best prospect in the White Sox system, has limited opponents to a .182 average, third-lowest among International League relievers this season. Over his last six appearances, Marinez has not allowed a run and has thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.
The Knights now hit the road over the next week going to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Buffalo. The Knights return home July 24 for an eight-game home stand against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Gwinnett.
