New polling place for Fort Mill voters named
The polling location for the Carolina Precinct in Fort Mill has been changed. Voters assigned to the Carolina Precinct who were voting at Lifepointe Christian Church at 2270 Deerfield Drive have been moved to the new Fort Mill School District Office at 2233 Deerfield Drive.
This is a permanent move, and voters will be mailed updated voter registration cards. Voters are instructed to destroy their old voter registration cards and replace with the updated card. This change will be in effect for the upcoming general election in November.
Citizens can sign up for DNC access
The Democratic National Convention Committee and Obama for America announced that the public can sign up for the opportunity to attend President Obama and Vice President Biden’s acceptance speeches for the Democratic Party’s nomination at Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 6.
These community credentials will allow citizens to participate in the final night of the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and be there in person as President Obama gives his last convention speech as a candidate for president.
Anyone interested in signing up for community credentials should visit barackobama.com/community-credentials.
The first two nights of official convention are Sept. 4 and Sept. 5 at Time Warner Cable Arena. All delegates and guests credentialed for the first two nights of the convention will also be seated at Bank of America Stadium.
Tax prep volunteers needed
Looking for a different kind of volunteer work? How about volunteering to do taxes for Lancaster area residents this tax season?
United Way of Lancaster County is looking for volunteers to spend a little time learning about taxes. If you’re interested, you’ll be trained with Internal Revenue Service tax materials to help people whose incomes are $50,000 or less with their federal and state individual income tax returns.
Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program, you will learn to prepare simple federal and state tax returns. In return, you will be asked to donate about 4 hours a week helping at a VITA/TCE site from mid-January through April 15. Most VITA/TCE sites use computers to prepare and electronically transmit tax returns (e-file). If you’re interested in learning to e-file tax returns on a volunteer basis then VITA/TCE can teach you.
No accounting experience is needed. All that’s required is a desire to help others who cannot prepare their basic tax returns or afford to pay a preparer. VITA/TCE volunteers participate in training session – in class, online, or through self-study – then are tested on what they learned. Once certified, volunteers are assigned to VITA/TCE sites in neighborhood community centers, libraries, churches, etc. in locations convenient to VITA/TCE customers.
For more information or to volunteer, contact Melanie Outlaw at 803-283-8923 or moutlaw@uwaylcsc.org
