Cherish your blessings
My grandmother and mother were both excellent cooks. My grandmother was a chef, so when I was a child she was always trying different recipes. I would sample them and I don’t ever remember rejecting any of her cooking.
I was right there with her every step of the way, watching and helping. Both of them always shared what they cooked with family, friends and neighbors. My grandmother would always fix a to-go box for everyone. I love to cook and I am sure that I inherited this from both of them.
Last week, I was on my way to the Belair United Methodist Church’s food bank to deliver some non-perishable goods that were collected at this month’s Indian Land Action Council meeting. I was stuck in traffic at a construction site and I started to think about those days cooking with my family.
But what if I didn’t have anything to cook? What a frightful thought!
When I got to the church I was greeted by Linda Pickard, church secretary, who helped me unload the car and repeatedly thanked me for the donations. This is a very small church that had a very big idea and it worked. It will continue to grow because this is an area with a lot of big hearts and feelings for others. Last week they served 223 individuals and 68 families. I am so thankful for the Belair food bank, and the Fort Mill Care Center and Hope of Lancaster. They are great!
As I pulled away from the church I thought how kind acts keep your loved ones’ memories alive and fill you with joy. My mom and grandmother would have been happy to know that I brought someone something to cook.
