Hilton catches 3 TDs as Nation Ford breezes past Demons

- Herald correspondent

LUGOFF --

For the second straight week, the Lugoff-Elgin Demons ran into a team from Fort Mill Township and came away with a loss as the Nation Ford Falcons passed their way to a 51-13 win.

This was the first meeting between the two schools as the Falcons improved to 2-1 in its non-region schedule with the win and picked up its first ever win in school history over a 4A school.

Nation Ford quarterback Dalton Helms had a lot of targets, but junior Riley Hilton was his favorite of the game as the two combined for three touchdowns. Hilton caught just three passes for six yards, but his touches came at a crucial time, all in the end zone.

“The guys executed and Dalton is doing a good job,” said Falcons head coach Michael Allen. “We know we got speed. Our coaching staff has worked hard to put in this offense and we are still working on it. We are trying to get better each week.”

Helms threw for five touchdowns, going 18-28 for 263 yards in another impressive performance for the first-year starter.

The Falcons also had two receivers – seniors Dijuan Ussery and AK McCoy – go over 100 yards in the passing game.

Nation Ford, which also had a 32-yard field goal by Corey Condron, seemed to score at will as it found the end zone on most of its drives.

In their opening drive in the third quarter, the Falcons went 65 yards as Helms hit Ussery on two big first down passes of 18 and 20 yards before senior Daniel Jackson finished off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run.

Helms connected with Ussery on the Falcons’ second drive, this time after starting from their worst field position of the game back at their own 26 yard line. Helms hit Ussery on a 40-yard touchdown pass that was set up by a 34-yard completion to McCoy.

In the first half, Jackson had big runs of 14 and 10 yards as the Falcons opened the second quarter starting a drive at their own 46 yard line.

Despite two missed opportunities by the Falcons, Helms went back to his bread-and-butter in the game hitting Hilton for a third score after a dozen plays and 54 yards of offense.

After another defensive stop, Nation Ford came back on its second series and went down the field with no mercy as Helms and McCoy combined on five of the 10 plays of the drive that ended as Helms hit McCoy for a 25-yard score.

After taking the opening kickoff of the game, Nation Ford came out on its first drive and wasted no time scoring going 10 plays for 50 yards and actually scored twice, but an illegal procedure against the Falcons called a touchdown back.

However, a roughing the passer call went in Nation Ford’s favor and put the offense down near the goal line before Helms connected with Hilton to get the Falcons on the board.

After a three-and-out by the Demons, Ussery returned a punt 48 yards to the 3-yard line. Helms then hit Hilton again two plays later to extend the Falcons’ lead.

Lugoff-Elgin came back and got on the board after facing a fourth and 16 at the Falcons’ 37-yard line when junior quarterback Shon Belton scrambled to his right and hit a wide open senior Derrick Miller for the score.
