Third quarter barrage sends Fort Mill to loss

CHAPIN -- 

Dutch Fork used a 21-point third quarter to run past a tuckered-out Fort Mill squad, 35-14, on Friday to even the Yellow Jackets’ record at 1-1.

Fort Mill dropped two could-have-been touchdown passes on its first drive, and the Silver Foxes (1-1) never let the Jackets forget it. Dutch Fork scored in a variety of ways, including a 59-yard punt return and a double-pass for a score, and the Jackets’ run-based offense couldn’t catch up.

Rylan Wells ran for one touchdown but never got his passing game in gear. Poor punting and a lost fumble also contributed to the defeat. Dutch Fork’s Jordan Berry, meanwhile, was firing on so many cylinders that they could have added a couple.

Berry caught the double-pass touchdown, when Derek Olenchuk screened to Drew Williams, who tossed a 48-yard pass to a wide-open Berry, and also sprinted for the punt return touchdown. Berry ended with seven catches for 150 yards.

Wells found a target in Josh Lafoe (four catches, 66 yards), but the dink-and-dunk Jackets couldn’t keep up with the Foxes’ big-play potential. Dutch Fork’s relentless pass-rush turned several attempted Fort Mill throws into Wells scrambles.

Note: The game was played in Chapin due to new turf being installed at Dutch Fork’s home field.
