Cummings completes basic training

Cummings completes basic training

Army Pvt. Camden R. Cummings has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Cummings is the son of Ralph Cummings of Fort Mill and a graduate of Fort Mill High School.

Todd earns honors

Air Force Airman 1st Class Dylan G. Todd graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Todd earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Stacy Todd of Fort Mill.

Grabowski graduates

Army National Guard Pfc. John M. Grabowski graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Grabowski is a 2006 graduate of Indian Land High School.

Yeats is a sailor

Navy Seaman Alexander C. Yeats, son of Carolyn A. Seekings of Fort Mill and Tristan C. Yeats of Davie, Fla., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Yeats completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ’’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

Yeats is a 2012 graduate of Nation Ford High School.

Britt deploys

Navy Fireman Clarence R. Britt, Jr, a 2006 graduate of Fort Mill High School, recently deployed.

Britt along with fellow sailors and Marines assigned to the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), departed Norfolk Naval Station for the ship’s 22nd and final deployment.

Enterprise is slated to deploy to the U.S. Navy’s 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation as part of an ongoing rotation of U.S. forces supporting maritime security operations in international waters around the globe.

Working with allied and partner maritime forces, the Enterprise and her accompanying strike group will focus heavily on maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts designed to maintain regional stability.

The Enterprise Carrier Strike Group consists of approximately 5,500 sailors and Marines who, during the past few months, successfully completed a series of complex training events and certifications to ensure they were capable of operating effectively and safely together.

These skills, which will be vital as the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group travels to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), were recently tested during the carrier’s Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).

Snipes on bowl staff

Army Cadet Jason A. Snipes was on the Army staff in San Antonio, Texas, supporting the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the nation’s premier all-star high school football game. It featured 90 star players and the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band with 125 high school musicians.

Snipes is a cadet attached to The Citadel ROTC, Charleston. He is the son of Kelly J. and Mark J. Snipes of York and a 2006 graduate of Fort Mill High School.

Williams finishes basic training

Navy Seaman Apprentice Durante M. Williams, son of Monica C. Pagan of Lancaster and Zeb D. Goode of Charlotte recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Williams completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
