Fort Mill High hosting annual ‘Pink Out’ Friday

Fort Mill High School athletes will be cheering and tackling for the cure this week.

Fort Mill High will host its annual Pink Out event at 7:30 p.m. Friday when the varsity football team takes on York at home.

Members of the football team will wear pink socks and the cheerleaders will hold pink pom poms in honor of breast cancer awareness. In addition, band members will wear a pink ribbon and spectators are encouraged to wear pink.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the York County Cancer Association. The York County Cancer Association is a local not-for-profit that helps under insured or uninsured patients with free mammogram screenings, prescription costs and rides to doctor appointments.

“The York County Cancer Association has been going through some hard times recently and needs some donations,” said Judy LaFoe, Yellow Jacket team mom. “They also voted that all money raised through this Pink Out will be earmarked for mammogram screenings.”

Proceeds will be raised through merchandise sales and donations. Pink out T-shirts were sold for $12, as well as other merchandise, at the high school this week. Any left over merchandise will be for sale at the game. In addition, donation jars will be placed at the entrances and at the concession stand.

This is the third annual Pink Out game at Fort Mill High. The first event was held in 2010 after Andrea Godbolt, team mom and cancer survivor, learned Beverly DeMayo, a Fort Mill High teacher and football parent, was undergoing chemo. Having fought the disease herself, Godbolt wanted to do something to honor DeMayo. After learning yet another mom was battling the disease, the first ever Pink Out was organized. All three parents were honored at a JV football game where $900 was raised for the YCCA.

“As a team mom [and survivor], I feel honored to be involved. Cancer affects so many more people then we aware of,” Godbolt said. “Community support is essential, not only for those affected, but also for our local organizations that need financial help.”

This year, 13 moms will be honored during a brief halftime presentation, including five football moms, as well as some band member mothers and several aunts and grandmothers. April Simpkins will present cancer facts, announce the honored cancer warriors and read off the names of those who have passed away due to the disease.
