FORT MILL --
In a rebuilding season which has seen some ups and down, the Nation Ford Lady Falcons golf team had a recent upswing by beating Northwestern in a head-to-head match.
Now 3-5 on the season, Nation Ford shot a 217, besting the Lady Trojans by eight strokes at Springfield Golf Club.
The Lady Falcons were led by senior and medalist Nancy Holland, who shot a 45. Her score was followed with a 55 from sophomore Erin Mathis. Nation Ford’s other senior, Jasmine Saab, shot a 58 and sophomore Jordyn Zaino finished with a 59.
First year head coach Mary Gover said she is proud of how her team has pushed through during the season.
“My sophomores are doing well,” Gover said. “They have improved. We have improved from the start of the year until now.”
Nation Ford was scheduled to compete in the Easley Green Wave Invitational earlier in the week, but it was canceled.
The Lady Falcons’ two other wins this season came against York and Northwestern, who they have beaten twice this year.
Nation Ford have two more head-to-head matches – one against York this week and the other against a strong South Pointe squad – before the Region III-AAAA tournament Oct. 16.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Spring Lake Golf Course in York, but has been moved to the Lancaster Golf Course.
A top four finish, in a very tough region, at the tournament would propel Nation Ford to the Upper State championship tournament Oct. 22-23 at Smithfield Country Club in Easley.
