FORT MILL --
The second annual Jacket invitational ended with a JV cheerleading second place finish and a would be second place finish for the Varsity girls. That is, if they had chosen to compete.
I think we really pulled it together today and came together as a team to work it out, said JV cheerleader Emma Gargiulo. I think we did awesome, I didnt expect that, but Im really happy.
While the JV squad finished second in the 4A JV division, the varsity girls chose only to put on an exhibition since they were hosting the event. Their score of 266 would have put the girls in second place, however.
Its our home floor, we just wanted to go out, have fun and show people what we can do and let other people get the trophy, The girls did great though we would have gotten second if they had competed, said head varsity coach Jill Mathews.
This was only the second competition the varsity squad has been a part of this year.
We are hoping to stay strong and make it to state. Its our first year in 4A and I think we are well on our way to make it to state, said Mathews.
In order to make it to state, the girls will have to compete at Upper State and finish in the top eight to be invited.
The JV squad finished with a score of 224, behind only Boiling Springs 244. Northwestern came in third with 214 and Nation Ford finished fourth with a score of 199.
I think the girls did amazing, said head JV coach Brittney Hall. They worked so hard. These girls have never competed before so to come in today and pull second place, I am just beyond thrilled. I couldnt be any happier with them, Im so proud.
Boiling Springs also won the 4A Varsity division with a score of 282, Nation Ford finished second with a score of 253, Rock Hill finished third with 245, Northwestern finished fourth with a score of 234 and Lancaster finished fifth with 215.
In the 1A/2A division, Andrew Jackson won with a score of 203. Westminster finished second with a score of 178.
We are probably going to work on more difficulty in our stunts, timing and spacing, and being a little more clean for next time, said Hall. Those were some of the judges comments, but we didnt have a lot which was great. I just couldnt have asked them to do any better today.
