Most quarterbacks are known for their arms, but when youre up against a quarterback like senior Rylan Wells, you have to worry about his feet too.
Wells rushed for 86 yards and scored on three runs as Fort Mill rallied past Lancaster in the third quarter and won 42-18 to pick up a key Region III-AAAA win Friday night. As a team, the Yellow Jackets rushed for 408 yards.
Both Fort Mill and Lancaster came into Fridays game with a 1-3 region record, needing a win to gain momentum for a late season playoff push.
I didnt feel real good about the first half, but the kids came back and executed in the second half, said Fort Mill head coach Ed Susi. Once we started taking care of the ball, we did okay.
The Jackets closed the book on Lancaster about midway through the fourth quarter when Wells hit sophomore Breshon Simpson for a 26-yard touchdown to put Fort Mill up 28-12.
Junior Deryan Sanders added two more scores before the end of the game. The first came on a 29-yard run with about four minutes left in the game and the second on a one-yard run with about two minutes left.
Sanders rushed for 227 yards on 25 carries and two scores for the Jackets.
Fort Mill regained the lead in the third quarter after trailing 12-7 at the half. It moved the ball 75 yards in just five plays with a big first down run of 23 yards from Sanders that crossed midfield. Two plays later, Wells scrambled in from 37 yards out on a quarterback keeper to put the Jackets on top.
The Jackets defense allowed Lancaster to move the ball, but stopped its opponent well before the end zone.
Fort Mill struck again before the end of the third quarter.
Wells moved things along with another quarterback sneak up the middle, scoring from 28 yards out as the Jackets extended their lead.
Fort Mill got within scoring position at the start of the second quarter, but after two plays that resulted in lost yards, the Jackets had to settle for a 43-yard field goal attempt, which they couldnt convert.
Lancaster extended its lead on the next drive as senior Kaderrious Jackson ran in from 28 yards out after completing a key first-down pass of six yards to senior CD Pelham.
The Jackets finally got on the board with about a minute left in the half as Wells scrambled 26 yards to score.
Fort Mill fumbled on its first play from scrimmage of the game, giving the ball back to Lancaster. Jackson then hit Jay Hood for a 45-yard touchdown pass.
During its second series, Fort Mill moved the ball down the field, picking up three first downs. But the drive was stopped at the Bruins 24-yard line.
