Fort Mill’s annual Springmaid run Saturday

FORT MILL --

The 32nd annual Springmaid Road Race will take place Saturday through the winding streets of the Springfield community.

After beginning in 1979, the race has missed a couple of years (1993 and 2009) for various reasons, but has always been an attraction to local runners.

This year’s race will consist of a 5K event beginning at 8 a.m. Tammy Woods, director of recreation for the Anne Springs Close Greenway Recreation Complex, said about 100 runners have already signed up and they are expecting between 150 and 200 to participate.

The race will go through the Springfield neighborhood and along the greens of the Springfield Golf Course.

Because of the layout of the course, it won’t be a walk in the park, Woods said.

“It’s a beautiful run, but it’s not a flat, easy race,” she said. “It’s a challenge. It’s very hilly.”

The first 150 runners will get shirts and prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, along with first, second and third place finishers in each age division.

Proceeds from the event will help send kids to summer camps sponsored by the Complex.

Registration is $30 and race packets can be picked up on Friday, Nov. 2, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Complex, located on Tom Hall Street (Hwy. 160 East) near Springfield Parkway.

For more information about the race or to register, call the Complex at 547-4575.
