Let’s honor our veterans

My husband had an appointment at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia the other day, so I tagged along with him. As I waited for him I watched veteran’s coming in and out - some in wheelchairs, some with breathing equipment - and I thought, ‘do we show enough appreciation for what these men and women have done for us and our county?’

I decided with the election being on Nov. 6 with that entire hullabaloo I wanted to remind everyone that Veteran’s Day is on Nov. 11.

While I was at the VA Hospital I got some information and found that they treated 65,884 veterans last year and will treat many more this year. They also have a VA Caregiver support Group which meets on the first Friday of each month from 9 to 10 a.m. If you have any questions regarding this facility, call 1-888-651-2683.

I did a little research to see what was out there to honor the veteran’s and active duty men and women and found several things including some free meals. All Golden Corral restaurants on Monday Nov. 12 from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. will be giving a free meal to any person that has ever been in the military or is on active duty. Last year they served 375,000 veterans.

Chili’s restaurant on Nov. 11 will let veterans and active-duty military choose from a selected menu at no cost, and on Nov. 11 Applebee’s is offering a free meal to military veterans and active-duty military. Last year Applebee’s served one million veterans.

I picked these places because they are in our immediate area. But there are a lot of things out there and if you go to the website: themilitarywallet.com/veterans-day-free-meals-and-discounts/ you will find a lot more.

Please remember our veterans – they certainly deserve it.
