The priority should be helping victims of Sandy

Sandy victims should be the priority

This Saturday morning, those of us who reside in Indian Land, SC, found a brown bag with a paper stapled to the bag attached to our mailbox post. The letter was from the Palmetto Council Boy Scouts of America (York District) asking to have non-perishable food items, personal hygiene, baby food or diapers to benefit York District residents who need assistance left in the bag for collection next Saturday, Nov. 10.

If you are not aware, sections of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia were hit by a winter storm called Sandy within the past week. Towns, neighborhoods and communities have been leveled to the ground. People have had homes, apartments, condos, and small businesses and their precious belongings destroyed.

With that being said, the Boy Scouts should have the majority if not the entire collection sent up to the Northeast where it is needed most. People receiving items in this region do not need the items as much as they need them there. All of the items listed on the paper are in need in the Northeast. If the tides were turned, we would expect the same from them.

This is a terrible oversight by the Boy Scouts when the collections can go to people desperate for food, personal hygiene, clothing, baby products. I urge all residents who were planning to contribute to the Boy Scouts to contribute /donate to one of the organized collection drives going on in the region for Sandy victims.
