FORT MILL --

Kids At Heart, a self-proclaimed “easy-core” band from Fort Mill, is gearing up to play its first show Friday at the Bonu5 Room in Cornelius, N.C.

“This is our first show and we’re really excited,” said vocalist Chris Porter, a senior at Nation Ford High School.

Kids at Heart formed this past summer, when the six teenage band members began combining their styles while playing for fun.

“We’re really new to the scene. We actually thought long and hard about what our style is. What we’ve written and what we play reflects six different guys’ musical interests,” explains Porter. “We decided it’s easy-core. It’s a mix of happy and up-beat pop music, with the fast and more angry side of hardcore.”

When asked what kind of audience they expected to attract, Kids at Heart explained that their writing style can be enjoyed universally.

“We want to talk about things that everyone can relate to and that’s really hard not to like,” said Porter.

While recording their first few songs, the band did have to muster up new levels of patience.

“The recording process is tedious and takes forever,” said Porter. “But we devote entire weekends to it and hang out as a band and really try to improve our sound. So far we have three songs recorded,” including two on their Facebook page.

The boys always seem to make memories while working though, according to Porter.

“The funniest practice moment was when we all hopped on different instruments than we play in the band, and started playing “Darker Half” by Backtrack,” Porter said.

Kids at Heart, comprised of Trevor Wallace, Chris Porter, Matt Kalbaugh, Daniel Wallace, Logan Whitmire and Connor McAuliffe, hopes to attract an audience of all ages and backgrounds at the band’s first show this week, and wants to reach the masses with its upbeat style and down-to-earth lyrics.
