FORT MILL --

If there is one thing the Fort Mill High wrestling team needs for Christmas – it’s some R & R.

Now 11-2 on the year, Fort Mill finished the first half of its season by beating the Chester Cyclones 52-22 Tuesday night.

Fort Mill was scheduled to go to the Kyle Maynard Duals Saturday, but had to pull out due to an overwhelming number of injuries. The Jackets have had to rely on several JV wrestlers to fill holes in the roster.

“We wrestled a lot of back up guys and some did well and some need work,” Fort Mill head coach Chris Brock said after the win.

Brock said going into the Chester match that his squad wanted to put up enough points to win and get out of the first half of the season without another injury.

“We need to recover, heal and regroup,” Brock added.

They got some help as Chester forfeited at 106 and 170 pounds. However, Fort Mill also forfeited two weight classes – 220 and heavyweight.

After getting the draw at 106 and going up 6-0 through forfeit, Fort Mill’s Eddie Byrams set the tone for the night by getting a pin in the first period over Chester’s Griffin Kaleb at 113 pounds.

Chester got on the board at 120 pounds as Cardan Williams pinned Nick Gray in the first period.

However, Fort Mill bounced right back when junior Tyler Turner got a technical fall over Vernon Hughes at 126 pounds after building a 16-0 lead.

Chester got its last legitimate win of the dual at 132 pounds as Earl Hinton beat Jack Debbout 13-4 to make it 17-10 in favor of the Jackets.

Chester, which is rebuilding this year after losing 10 wrestlers to graduation, has just four seniors on a squad that features 13 freshman.

“I will have to build on that,” said Chester head coach Joe Conlan. “Hopefully we will get there sooner than later.”

At 138 pounds, Fort Mill’s Danny Angel outlasted Khalique Davis 11-9 in overtime.

The Jackets’ Nigel Bostick (145) got a second period pin over Spencer Bramble, Nick Leitten (152) and Will Hooker (160) both won by decision and Malik Long (170) won by forfeit to put Fort Mill up 40-10 and clinch the win.

Fort Mill’s Gray Hinson won by pinning Jake McKeown at 182 pounds in the first period and B.J. Hurst didn’t even break a sweat pinning Luke Ralston in just 17 seconds to finish out the winning for the Jackets.

Chester’s Temaris Dixon (220) and Gary Dunlap (hwt.) both won by forfeit to close out the match for the Cyclones.
