FORT MILL --

Some days basketball players have a good game, but what Nation Ford junior Taylor Yarborough did recently was almost beyond explanation.

Yarborough led the Lady Falcons to a 77-31 win over Indian Land with a 41-point performance, setting a school record for both boys’ and girls’ basketball.

She single-handedly outscored the entire Indian Land team going 16-for-30 from the field, including seven three-pointers. She would have had more, but missed a free-throw in the second quarter and went 2-for-3 from the foul line in the game.

Nation Ford never really had any trouble in the game as Indian Land didn’t hit a field goal in the first half until 3:04 lwas eft in the second quarter and shot 1-20 in the first half.

The Lady Falcons scored 26 points in the opening quarter as Yarborough scored 20 herself, shooting 8-15 from the field, including three from downtown.

Nation Ford added 25 more second quarter points and took a 51-12 lead into the half. Yarborough went 5-for-7 in the second quarter and had 34 points by the half, setting a girls’ record by halftime. The Lady Falcons shot 50 percent in the first half (20-40) as a team.

Nation Ford dialed back Yarborough in the second half as she scored seven second-half points and took just eight shots. She hit two of her three shots in the third quarter and started the final quarter with 38 points.

“I wasn’t going for the record, but when I got to 38, I thought I would go for it then,” she said.

The Lady Falcons carried a 61-21 lead into the fourth quarter and despite trying, it didn’t seem if Yarborough would get the record after she missed her first four shots in the fourth, including two three-pointers.

Then, with 2:15 left in the game, Yarborough hit a trey to break the school record set by T.J. Jones, who scored 40 points in a holiday tournament game at Hilton Head High in 2010.

For the game, Nation Ford shot 46 percent (32-70) from the field.

Indian Land, playing with just five players, was led by sophomore Kendra Nesmith, who had 18 points.

Nation Ford was playing with only nine players and was missing five players from the game, which was added after the original schedule was released. All but one Nation Ford player scored in the game.

Nation Ford will play again at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 at home.
