Author to speak at Newcomers mixer
Newcomers Club of York County, a women’s social and civic-minded organization, meets at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 9 for a mixer in the Palmetto Room of the Old Town Bistro, 135 E. Main St., Rock Hill.

It’s a 12-step meeting for children and teens whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. The group offers meetings for ages 6-12 and 13-19. Club for young mothers A new club for young mothers meets in the conference room at the Fort Mill Library in Baxter Village. Woman’s Club of Fort Mill helps kids celebrate The Woman’s Club of Fort Mill in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Mill, hosts a monthly birthday party for the 53 children in the club. Each child participates, and those whose birthdays fall during that month are given a book as a birthday gift from the Woman’s Club. All of the children are treated to cupcakes, ice cream, juice and chips to make it a real celebration. In addition to the birthday party, Jordane Reid, director of the Fort Mill branch of the BGC, presents to a boy and a girl a “Youth of the Month” certificate recognizing them for outstanding citizenship.

Vintage Club
The next Vintage Club has upcoming activities:
• Bowling the first Monday of each month at Strikers in Rock Hill. The cost is $9 a session, which includes games, shoes, and lunch.

Any resident of Tega Cay who is at least 50 years old can join the Vintage Club. This includes a couple even if only one of them is 50 or older.
Monthly meetings are held at the Glennon Center in Tega Cay, providing more room for diners and additional members. The club meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:15 p.m. at the Glennon Center and holds a variety of outings and activities. Dues are $15 per person a year and the dinners each month are $21 per person, including tax and gratuity.

UDC group meets
The Florence Thornwell Chapter 246, United Daughters of the Confederacy in Fort Mill, welcomes new members as well as descendants of former chapter members.
The chapter was originally chartered as the Fort Mill Chapter 246. The name was changed to the Florence Thornwell Chapter in 1909 to honor its first president, Florence Thornwell. Thirty-five ladies, whose husbands, fathers, grandfathers, brothers and uncles served the Confederacy, were charter members. Many of the members’ surnames are as familiar today in Fort Mill as they were 110 years ago when the chapter was chartered.

Legion Post 43 seeks members
American Legion Post 43 in Fort Mill is actively recruiting all eligible retired and active duty military members. The post, located at 427 Banks St., Fort Mill, also holds public bingo nights at 6:30 p.m. every Friday. For details, call 547-2414.
VFW has membership drive
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9138 is actively working to recruit all eligible veterans and active duty military personnel into the VFW. Anyone who ever served or is currently serving in any of the five branches of the U.S. military, including the Reserves or National Guard, is welcome to join. Birthmother group meets regularly
A support group for women who have given up children for adoption meets in Fort Mill. The goal of this group is to help heal from the pain of losing children. Beta Sigma Phi is here to help
Beta Sigma Phi, an international women’s sorority, has a chapter in Fort Mill. The sorority is nonacademic with 200,000 members in chapters around the world and 30 members in Fort Mill and Tega Cay (Epsilon Epsilon Chapter). It was founded for social, cultural and civic enrichment.
The Greek letters of its name represent life, learning and friendship, which is the organization’s motto. They hold two annual charity drives: one in the fall to raise money for Fort Mill Care Center and one in the spring to raise money for Foundation for Fort Mill Schools.

Scuba club dives into events

A support group for victims of incest meets in Indian Land. Sarah Harrison, an expert peer counselor in the field, hosts the group.
