Xylina McDaniel scored 19 points and had six steals as No. 16 North Carolina used a key 19-2 second-half run to come back and beat Clemson 65-58 Sunday in an ACC women’s opener.
The Tar Heels (13-1) trailed 43-35 after Chancie Dunn’s layup for Clemson. McDaniel responded with a layup with 12 minutes, 20 seconds left, sparking the 19-2 run that put North Carolina ahead 54-45 with 6:23 to play.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt added 15 points, six steals, six rebounds and five assists for the Tar Heels. Nikki Dixon led Clemson (4-8) with 22 points, and Quinyotta Pettaway had 10 points and 18 rebounds.
No. 4 Duke 73, Monmouth 32: Tricia Liston scored 15 for Duke (11-0), and Monmouth (3-8) tied a Division I record with three points in the first half in Durham.
Chelsea Gray scored 13 and Haley Peters added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Duke.
N.C. State 70, St. Bonaventure 66: Kody Burke’s put-back with 13 seconds left secured a Wolfpack (8-5) road win. She finished with 20 points. CeCe Dixon led all scorers with 23 points for St. Bonaventure (7-7).
No. 21 Florida State 76, Boston College 70: Alexa Deluzio had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Seminoles (11-1) at home against Boston College (6-5) in an ACC opener.
No. 7 Kentucky 78, Marist 56: Jennifer O’Neill scored 21 and Kentucky pulled away at home for its 11th straight victory. DeNesha Stallworth also had 21 points for the Wildcats (12-1).
Elizabeth Beynnon had 15 points for the Red Foxes (5-6).
No. 13 Tennessee 66, Rutgers 47: Tennessee (9-3) used strong defense and balanced scoring to defeat visiting Rutgers (8-4). The victory was the 1,200th in Tennessee’s program history, an NCAA best.
Tennessee’s Isabelle Harrison had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Meighan Simmons scored 15 and Bashaara Graves 11. Kahleah Copper led the Scarlet Knights with 13 points.
Central Michigan 73, No. 20 Texas 65: Niki DiGuilio scored 21 to help Central Michigan (6-6) upset Texas (7-4) in the consolation of the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic in San Diego. Imani McGee-Stafford led Texas with 18 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks. Chassidy Fussell had 17 points.
Charlotte 63, Mississippi Valley State 48: Hillary Sigmon scored 18, including five 3-pointers, and Jennifer Hailey had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the 49ers (9-3) in the consolation game of the GSU Holiday & Hoops Tournament in Atlanta. Amanda Dowe had 16 rebounds and junior Ny Hammonds had a career-high 11 assists. MVSU is 3-8.
Catawba 76, Livingstone 54: Taylor May had 18 points and 10 rebounds as Catawba (5-5) won at home. Elizabeth Merritt added 14 points. Cierra York scored 12 and Ashley Walker 10 for Livingstone (4-5).
Virginia 74, Wofford 39: Mike Tobey scored a career-high 19 with 9-for-10 shooting and the Cavaliers (10-3) shot 63.8 percent as a team in the home rout. Spencer Collins led the Terriers (6-7) with 17 points.
Winthrop 50, Hampton 43: Derrick Henry and Andre Smith hit back-to-back 3s with just under four minutes remaining to lift Winthrop (6-5) at home against Hampton (2-9). Gideon Gamble led the Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Joab Jerome scored 10.
