Lisa McCarley is No. 5 on the Fort Mill 11

January 1, 2013

— Best known for her support of middle-school athletics, Lisa McCarley helped breathe new life into the effort by starting a local version of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Although you won’t find celebrities like Pamela Anderson dancing in McCarley’s version, local celebrities such as Fort Mill High Principal Dee Christopher and others boot-scootin’ boogied their way to $10,000 for middle-school sports – all because of McCarley’s efforts in 2012.

Those same efforts will continue into 2013 as well.

“We are well into the planning of it,” McCarley said, regarding another cast of local dancers who will be raising more funds next year.

The second local version of “Dancing With the Stars” will be held Feb. 23 at the Glennon Center in Tega Cay.

McCarley – and her colleagues in an organization set up to keep middle school sports alive after funding was cut from the school district budget – were successful in raising the profile of the cause. The school board decided late in 2012 to use part of its fund balance to donate $60,000 in a one-time payment to the cause. This provides a cushion in case fundraising efforts fall short in any given year.
