No. 6 on the Fort Mill 11 list for 2012 is David Hudspeth

January 1, 2013

Fort Mill Town Manager David Hudspeth retired twice in 2012 – the second time for real.

He technically “retired” for two weeks in July in anticipation of changes to the state retirement system – but not before arranging to be rehired. However, Hudspeth said he decided during his time off to make a change after 15 years on the job.

“We were a little surprised when he told us about it,” Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk said the day after Hudspeth told town council members.

Hudspeth’s brief prior retirement was arranged so he could start drawing his pension before any possible action by the state legislature would reduce benefits for future retirees.

His last day will be Feb. 1. He wanted to stay on the job long enough to help with the transition after his successor is hired. That successor is former Tega Cay City Manager Dennis Pieper.

What Hudspeth plans to do after Feb. 1 remains undecided, he said.

“There are a number of options I’m considering, and I’ll probably make an announcement around the time that I leave,” he said.
