A new year mean a new chance at redemption – take it!

It’s that time of year again.

I’m not talking about the time when everyone is running around buying last-minute gifts or maxing out their credit cards. I’m thinking about that time when people are gearing up for their New Year’s resolutions. Some people are hoping to finally kick a bad habit, lose weight or be a better person.

A new year means a new chance for many. It is possibly a chance to pay off that maxed out card.

I have to be honest with you. When it comes to resolutions, I tend to be a little on the pessimistic side. Let me explain. My thoughts about New Year’s resolutions are basically wrapped up like this: if this resolution is so important, why wait for the New Year to make it? Some, not all, people also are cramming in their last minute “vices” with hopes that the New Year will somehow be different.

I am not advocating that people nix the idea of resolutions. What I would like to see is a philosophy that important things are not to be put off simply because of a day on our calendar. Sometimes the thought is that a certain day somehow makes resolutions more important than the previous day.

Often times, when that much emphasis is placed on a day, as we slip in our resolutions the disappointment is greater.

Maybe I’m venting out suppressed feelings from my past resolution failures, or maybe my slightly pessimistic side is rearing its ugly head. Whatever the case is, the point I’m trying to make is don’t put off the important stuff – and don’t get devastated about a failure. Pick yourself up and get back at it. The Bible teaches that a righteous person gets back up after falling.

Most important, when it comes to resolutions, remember the words of the old hymn “ I am resolved to follow the Savior…”
