Cops seize phony cell gear from Tega Cay home

- mharrison@fortmilltimes.com

Detectives with the York County Sheriff’s Office seized several hundred counterfeit OtterBox cell phone cases and other related gear from a Tega Cay home Wednesday and said a 16-year-old boy is a suspect in the case.

Authorities said they removed 272 counterfeit OtterBox Defender Series cell phone cases, 11 counterfeit Mophie Juice Pack Plus cell phone cases and 72 other allegedly counterfeit cell phone accessories from the home. The value of the items was placed at approximately $15,000, they said.

The suspect's name has not been released because of his age.

A spokesman for the YCSO said detectives were led to the home while investigating the sale of allegedly counterfeit goods in the York County area via Craig's List, an online classified ads service. Investigators set up an undercover buy that took place at a location off Carowinds Boulevard in Fort Mill. Authorities said the teen "cooperated with detectives" after the alleged transaction and took them to his home, where police eventually removed what they describe as counterfeit goods.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is still on-going, authorities said.
