FORT MILL --
Both Fort Mill and Nation Ford split wrestling meets against York and Clover at Fort Mill High on Thursday.
Fort Mill, which recently dropped from ninth to 12th in the state standings after the U.S. Military Duals, fell to York 35-31, but was able to bounce back and beat Clover 46-19.
“We knew it was going to be tight against York,” said Jackets coach Chris Brock. “There were a lot of toss-up matches.”
Fort Mill was just one match away from the win against York and could look back at a couple of weight classes to see where the loss came from after having to forfeit at heavyweight, which cost six points, and having Jake Strong not be able to finish his match at 132 pounds due to injury default. That cost the Jackets another six.
Against York, John Brotemarkle (106), Eddie Byrams (113), Tyler Turner (120), Nick Leitten (145), Malik Long (152) and BJ Hurst (220) all won. Turner’s win was the 100th of his career.
Fort Mill jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but York quickly rallied to make it 10-10. The Jackets then pushed to 19-13 on Leitten and Long’s wins, but they dropped four straight matches to put York ahead 29-19. After Hurst’s win rallied the Jackets to 29-25, Fort Mill was forced to forfeit at heavyweight to push the score to 35-25 with only one match left.
Against Clover, Fort Mill struggled early and dropped three of its first five matches to tie the score at 9-9. From there, the Jackets won seven of the next nine matches for the victory.
Winning for Fort Mill were Brotemarkle (106), Byrams (113), Turner (120), Nigel Bostick (138), Leitten (152), Long (160), Will Hooker (170) Caleb Cisco (195) and Hurst (220).
Nation Ford edged Clover 28-27 and then lost hard to York 52-21.
Despite having to give up 24 points through forfeits in four weight classes, Nation Ford outscored Clover 28-3 in the remaining matches.
“Forfeiting four weight classes and pulling out a win is rare,” said Falcons head coach Paul Richardson.
Nation Ford forfeited at 113, 120, 195 and 220.
The Falcons got wins from Collin Godbout (126), Michael Allen (132), Elliot Wallace (138), Nick Raniszewski (152), Cody Carter (160), Tyler Godbout (182) and Josh Driscoll (HWT.).
The matches scored back and forth with Clover leading 12-3 early because of the forfeits, but Wallace’s win tied at 12. Raniszewski evened scores at 15 before Carter put Nation Ford up 21-15.
After another tie at 21-21, wins by Tyler Godbout and Josh Driscoll clinched the victory for Nation Ford.
Against York, Nation Ford struggled, behind from the beginning and unable to recover like it did against Clover.
Winning for the Falcons against Clover were Allen (132), Raniszewski (152), Carter (160), Tyler Godbout (182) and Driscoll (220).
