Sons of the American Revolution to host historian Michael Burgess

SAR hosts speaker on battle at Blackstock’s

The Colonel William Bratton Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will host speaker, historian Michael Burgess, who will speak on the Revolutionary War Battle at Blackstock’s Plantation 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Mill Library, 1818 2nd Baxter Crossing, Fort Mill.

This battle, fought Nov. 20, 1780, in Union County, near Cross Anchor, is one of the most significant engagements fought during the Southern Campaign of 1780-82. The battle featured the second and final face-to-face engagement between Banastre Tarleton and Thomas Sumter, pitting two of the most controversial and successful commanders in combat on the ground at Blackstock’s Plantation. The Battle included many of the area’s most important patriot militia leaders including Col. William Bratton, Col. William Hill, Col. Edward Lacey, Col. Richard Winn and Col. Thomas Taylor.

The meeting is open to guests and family members, as well as anyone interested in researching their ancestral lineage with the possibility of joining SAR.

Caregivers offer support

A caregivers support group meets at 852 Gold Hill Road, suite 201, Fort Mill. This group is a structured gathering of caregivers, family and friends of persons with dementia who meet to discuss issues related to Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Call 396-2155.

Rotary: ‘Service above self’

Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Fort Mill Golf Course Clubhouse, a group of Rotarians and guests meet to discuss how to apply “Service Above Self.” The mission of Rotary is to eradicate Polio worldwide.

Fort Mill Lions Club invites new members

The Fort Mill Lions Club meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at Unity Hall in Unity Presbyterian Church with dinner served at 7 p.m. The meetings begin at 7:30 p.m., ending around 8:15 p.m.

Civic sorority welcomes moms

Beta Sigma Phi is here to help

Beta Sigma Phi, an international women’s sorority, has a chapter in Fort Mill. The sorority is nonacademic with 200,000 members in chapters around the world and 30 members in Fort Mill and Tega Cay (Epsilon Epsilon Chapter). It was founded for social, cultural and civic enrichment.

The Greek letters of its name represent life, learning and friendship, which is the organization’s motto. They hold two annual charity drives: one in the fall to raise money for Fort Mill Care Center and one in the spring to raise money for Foundation for Fort Mill Schools.

Yoga Club welcomes all

The Charlotte Yoga Club in Fort Mill and Lake Wylie brings $5 Yoga, Budokon and Pilates classes to the area. There’s no cost to join. Go to www.meetup.com/charlotteyogaclub.

Vintage Club lowers minimum age

Any resident of Tega Cay who is at least 50 years old can join the Vintage Club. This includes a couple even if only one of them is 50 or older.

Monthly meetings are held at the Glennon Center in Tega Cay, providing more room for diners and additional members. The club meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:15 p.m. at the Glennon Center and holds a variety of outings and activities. Dues are $15 per person a year and the dinners each month are $21 per person, including tax and gratuity.
