1993

• J.B. Mills, retired merchant, local snow “forecaster” and one of Fort Mill’s most colorful characters, died at his Confederate Street home at the age of 87.

• Gloria Parker joined the ranks of the Fort Mill Police Department as an officer.

• Tony’s Pizza moved to a larger and newly renovated building on Academy Street. The new location would accommodate 100 customers.

• A 23-year-old Fort Mill Township woman was killed when her automobile collided head-on with a truck on Steele Road.

1973

• SSgt. John A. Rock of Fort Mill was the Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Third Army and 101st Airborne Division’s Non Commissioned Officer Academy at Fort Campbell, Ky.

• Mayor Lunsford McFadden issued a proclamation calling for a special week of recognition for our Veterans of the Vietnam War.

• Mrs. Myra Phillips, whose speech was entitled “A Frog Leap from Boredom,” won first place at the Fort Mill Toastmistress Club speech contest.

• Going into the conference tournament, Fort Mill’s boys’ basketball team was 11-8. The girls were 18-3 and tied for first place with Great Falls.

1953

• Fort Mill schools were granted a year’s extension as an independent school district, giving the district a reprieve of one year before being forced to consolidate with the Rock Hill School District.

• Pfc. Grady Ervin returned from Korea after serving there for 15 months.

1933

• Jesse Harris was appointed assistant postmaster of Fort Mill, filling the vacancy caused by the death of David G. Culp.

• Smythe’s Cash and Carry advertised that if anyone had cattle, hogs or poultry for sale they should call them at phone No. 29.

1913

• Messrs. J. M. Massey and B.F. Massey, Jr., bought the Main Street drug business of Parks Drug Co.

• Messrs. A.F. Montrose and L.Y. McAfee opened a motion picture theatre on Main Street, next to the grocery of W.L. Hall. The pictures changed nightly.
