Off-duty cop assaulted in Fort Mill

- adouglas@heraldonline.com

A unknown suspect pepper-sprayed and injured an off-duty Charlotte police officer in a gas station parking lot on Thursday afternoon in Fort Mill, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.

The off-duty cop told deputies he’d arranged to meet the man through Craigslist in order to sell an iPhone 4 for $280 at the Circle K gas station on Carowinds Boulevard.

The man who assaulted him “seemed very nervous” and “hesitant to shake his hand” before he took the phone, pepper-sprayed him and ran toward a nearby car, the Charlotte cop told deputies.

As the man fled, the cop chased him on foot and pulled out his “back up weapon,” yelling “police, police,” the report states.

The cop caught up to the man and tried to “take him down to the ground,” according to the report.

The suspect managed to break free, the report states, and threw the phone back to the Charlotte cop.

After the scuffle, the suspect got inside a car and shut the door on the police officer, injuring his shin, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The suspect and a passenger in the car speed off towards North Carolina in a silver Ford Crown Victoria, the cop told deputies.

No arrests have been made in the case.
