FORT MILL — The Lady Falcons scattered a dozen hits as they were led by sophomore Sierra Mitchell, who went 3-3 with an RBI, as well as junior Carolyn Thompson, who went 1-3 with four RBI in a win over Rock Hill.
Behind some solid hitting, the Nation Ford Lady Falcons softball team picked up their first win of the 2013 season, beating Rock Hill 16-8.
The Lady Falcons scattered a dozen hits as they were led by sophomore Sierra Mitchell, who went 3-3 with an RBI, as well as junior Carolyn Thompson, who went 1-3 with four RBI.
Nation Ford opened the game and it looked as if they were going to run away with things by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first on six hits.
“They came out aggressive,” said Falcons’ head coach Michael Kidd. “We stood strong and played Nation Ford softball for seven innings.”
First baseman Ashley Trull opened things up in the first with a single for Nation Ford. Two batters later, Falcons’ pitcher Brooke McCurry aided herself by hitting a double, scoring Trull and Haley Hammond.
Centerfield Darby Trull singled and then catcher Carolyn Thompson doubled to score pinch runner Chanel Turner and Trull.
Later in the inning Carly Williams singled in two more runners to put the Lady Falcons up 7-0. Before the inning was over Nation Ford would add another run to make 8-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Hammond would led things off with a single and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Thompson as the Lady Falcons went up 9-0 and looked to have the game in hand.
However, the Lady Bearcats finally got to McCurry as they scored four runs on four hits in the top of the third to make a game of it.
Third baseman Heather Sutton started the inning with a triple and was driven in by Bayley Hinson, who singled in both Sutton and Noelle McCullough, who reached on a fielder’s choice. Two batters later, Rock Hill pitcher Macey Brazzell helped herself out by doubling in Page Love, who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
Bearcats leftfielder Rebekah Addison would then single in Brazzell as Rock Hill came roaring back.
Nation Ford would add another run in the fourth, but Rock Hill kept chipping away as they added two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
An error allowed Love to reach in the fifth and back-to-back singles by Brazzell and Addison would plate two runs for Rock Hill.
Then in the sixth Sutton would led the inning off with a single and Hinson would double in both Sutton and McCullough to make the score 11-8.
At that time, McCurry was pulled for Hammond for the Lady Falcons. McCurry would go five and a third innings allowing eight runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out eight and eventually get the win.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nation Ford would slam the door on Rock Hill by scoring five unanswered runs.
Hammond led the bottom of the inning off with a triple and would later score before Makenzie Mitchell would hit a two RBI single to plate Darby Trull and Thompson.
Hammond then came back in the top of the seventh for a 1-2-3 inning to close things out.
