FORT MILL --

The Fort Mill High boy’s golf team jumped off to a good start on the 2013 season by taking four of its eight matches so far.

Recently, Fort Mill beat Rock Hill and York at it home course, the Fort Mill Golf Club, but fell to Clover at River Hills Country Club. They also played in a four-way match against Great Falls, South Pointe and Nation Ford at Pinetuck Golf Club.

Against Rock Hill and York, Fort Mill shot a 163, compared to York’s 172 and Rock Hill’s 181.

The Jackets were led by Andrew Blum, who shot a 38, to lead all scorers. His score was followed by a 41 from both Corey Caudle and Ryan Long and then a 43 from Cory Brooks.

Jackets head coach Steve Gribble said his team is off to a slow start simply because the practice time hasn’t been available due to the bad weather in recent weeks.

“It has really set us back,” he said. “It is early right now.”

Gribble said he was pleased with where his team is right now.

“I am happy with what we got coming back from last year,” he said.

The Jackets fell by four strokes to Clover last week at River Hills. Fort Mill was led by Brooks, who shot a 39. His score was followed with a 41 from Ryan Morrison and a 44 from Shuler Cotton. Blum rounded out the scoring for the Jackets with a 45.

In the four-way match at Pinetuck, Fort Mill shot a 164 to finish four strokes behind Great Falls and six strokes behind South Pointe. However, they did beat Nation Ford, who shot a 170.

“South Pointe is pretty good; they are pretty solid,” Gribble said.

The Jackets were led by Brooks, who posted a 39. His score was followed with a 40 from Cotton and a 42 from Caudle. Blum finished off the scoring with a 43 for Fort Mill.

Gribble is hoping that as the weather warms up, so will his team.

“It’s still early and kinda cold and windy,” he said. “All teams have room from improvement and that is what we are working on now.”

Nation Ford was led by Corey Verhage, who shot a 39. Both John Neal and Will Howell shot rounds of 43 and Jack Borson finished with a 45 for the Falcons.

Fort Mill heads to the Magnolia Invitational at Beech Creek Golf Club in Sumter this week as well as playing in the Stallion Invitational at Pinetuck.
